World Embroidery Day is an international holiday designed to preserve the ancient folk traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered Ukrainian clothing. It is held annually on the third Thursday of May (a weekday). The holiday is unique and self-sufficient, not tied to any state or religious holiday. On this day, anyone can join in the celebration by wearing an embroidered shirt to work, university, school, or kindergarten.
The idea for the “World Embroidery Day” campaign was proposed in 2006 by Lesya Voronyuk, a student at the Faculty of History, Political Science, and International Relations at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. The impetus for the idea and celebration was Igor Zhytairuk's embroidered shirt, which he regularly wore to class, as did many other students. Lesya suggested that her classmates and fellow students choose one day and all wear embroidered shirts together. At first, several dozen students and a few faculty members wore embroidered shirts. But over the next few years, the holiday grew to a national level, with the Ukrainian diaspora around the world and supporters of Ukraine joining in.
