A Premiere That Brings People Together: How “We Must Live” Came to Life in San Francisco
On Sunday, June 7, the Ukrainian community of California gathered for a special occasion - the premiere of the play “We Must Live” by the amateur theater troupe Mandrivni Zirky, which operates under the nonprofit organization Hromada. This performance marked the finale of the theater season and filled the Ukrainian Hall in San Francisco with guests from across the Bay Area, Sacramento, and beyond.

The audience experienced the performance in one breath. This dynamic theatrical revue, inspired by the National Unity Radio Dictation, blended joy and sorrow, humor and a deep sense of pride in Ukraine. Through music, dance, and storytelling, the production showcased the richness of Ukraine’s regions - their traditions, dialects, and distinct cultural identities while emphasizing the unity that binds them all.

The emotional impact of the performance was especially powerful in light of current events. For the fifth year, Ukraine continues to resist russia’s genocidal aggression, and cultural initiatives like this serve not only to preserve identity but also as acts of support and solidarity.

Guests also enjoyed a warm and welcoming atmosphere, complemented by a complimentary buffet featuring drinks, fruit, and desserts.

Before the performance, a charity auction was held, followed by a raffle with valuable prizes. Thanks to the collective efforts of organizers and attendees, a total of $3,742.71 was raised to support Hromada’s humanitarian projects.

The organizers extend their sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this event - audience members, volunteers, partners, and artists.

Special thanks go to the cast of “Mandrivni Zirky,” led by director Yelena Bilyak, as well as the entire creative team, including actors, musicians, choreographers, technical crew, and support staff.

Additional thanks to the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in San Francisco and Father Oleh Kepeshchuk for providing the Ukrainian Hall venue.

We are grateful to our dedicated volunteers, photographer Oleg Stelmakh for capturing the evening, and Mr. Andriy Kryshtafovych for providing an authentic traditional Pokuttia costume for the production.

Special thanks also to all donors who contributed auction items and to Family Traditions (Sacramento) for providing delicious treats for the event.

“We Must Live” is more than a performance - it is a reminder of the power of culture, the strength of community, and the importance of supporting Ukraine, even thousands of miles away from home.
