Far from Ukraine, but with it in their hearts — this is how the Day of the Vyshyvanka was celebrated this year in the preschool educational spaces of Sacramento.

Today, when thousands of Ukrainian families live far from their homeland, it is especially important to maintain a connection for children with their roots, language, culture, and traditions. That is why Ukrainian daycare spaces and educational environments in Sacramento become places where young Ukrainians not only learn and spend time but grow with love for Ukraine.

A large Ukrainian diaspora resides in the capital of California today, and along with it, Ukrainian educational spaces are actively developing, helping children maintain a connection with their native culture even far from home.

In these May days, children's spaces were filled with vyshyvankas, Ukrainian songs, sunflowers, towels, music, and sincere children's smiles. For many children, this became their first acquaintance with Ukraine, its traditions, and culture, and for parents — an especially poignant moment to see how even far from home, the Ukrainian soul continues to live in the hearts of the new generation.

MUSIC THAT UNITES CHILDREN'S HEARTS 🎶

Loving teachers and caregivers create an atmosphere of warmth, joy, and Ukrainian family comfort for the children. Kids in vyshyvankas sang Ukrainian songs, listened to folk music, moved to melodies, and got acquainted with Ukrainian culture through creativity and play.

Especially warmly do young children's hearts joyfully respond to Ukrainian motifs. Through music, rhythm, and a shared atmosphere, children learn to feel their culture naturally, through emotions, beauty, and live communication.

When I come to this space, I see not only a modern and cozy educational institution. I see the sincerity, care, and love with which the teachers envelop the children every day. I see little eyes filled with trust, curiosity, and a desire to explore the world. And it is in such moments that it is especially felt how important it is today to preserve Ukrainian culture for children even far from their native land.

And when you see smiling children in vyshyvankas, your eyes involuntarily fill with tears. Because in such moments it is especially felt: Ukraine lives in its children.

UKRAINIAN TRADITIONS THROUGH CREATIVITY AND PLAY 🌻

The celebration of the Day of the Vyshyvanka continued in a creative and especially warm atmosphere of Ukrainian preschool institutions..

Embroidered towels, flags, sunflowers, folk decor, and elements of Ukrainian life filled the festive spaces with a special atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Every detail created a small Ukrainian world for children far from their homeland. Through creative activities, thematic photo zones, folk symbols, and Ukrainian images, children got acquainted with the traditions of their ancestors. For many of them, such moments become their first childhood memories of Ukraine.

The theatrical performance "Visiting Grandma and Grandpa" became especially touching. For many Ukrainian children today, this theme sounds especially poignant, as many of them are far from their relatives, grandmothers, and grandfathers who remained in Ukraine.

Teachers lovingly prepared an atmosphere of a real Ukrainian home for the children: Ukrainian pastries, folk decor, and warm family images. In these little smiles, in embroidered shirts, and in simple children's moments, something much greater was felt — the warmth of the Ukrainian family, which neither the distance of the ocean nor war can take away.

CHILDREN'S LETTERS WRITTEN FROM THE HEART 💙💛

Especially touching were the children's letters of support for Ukraine and Ukrainian defenders. The kids drew blue and yellow hearts, created small wishes, and through their children's works conveyed words of love and support to their native land. These letters did not contain loud or complex phrases, only childlike sincerity that cannot be faked. Little eyes shone with joy knowing that these letters would go to Ukraine.  Some of the children know that their relatives are on the Ukrainian front today. And some sincerely believe that the peace they drew on paper with their little hands will soon become a reality  and they will be able to return home again. It is through such simple yet profound moments that love for the homeland is formed, not through coercion, but through warmth, memory, and the living presence of Ukrainian culture in children's lives.

UKRAINE LIVES WHERE IT IS LOVED

Today, the Ukrainian vyshyvanka unites Ukrainians around the world. And even thousands of kilometers from home, the Ukrainian soul continues to live in children, in songs, in creativity, in embroidered colors, and in the love for Ukraine that adults pass on to the new generation every day.

Such educational spaces in Sacramento are much more than just daycare or children's activities. These are places where young Ukrainians learn to remember their roots, be proud of their culture, and feel that Ukraine is always near: in the heart, in the language, in the song, and in the warmth of human love. As a teacher, I can say that the most poignant moments for me are precisely these, when far from our native land, together with colleagues, we try to create a small Ukrainian world for children, filled with music, warmth, traditions, and love for their roots.

When I conduct music lessons, hear children's voices in vyshyvankas, see the sincere smiles of the little ones, and the love with which my colleagues envelop the children with care and pass on a piece of Ukrainian culture to them — then it is especially felt that Ukraine lives.

It lives in song, in children's words, in little hearts that, even far from home, continue to carry Ukrainian light into the world. And perhaps it is for such moments that it is worth preserving our culture and passing it on, with love, tenderness, and a memory of who we are.

I sincerely thank all the daycare owners, teachers, and people who create Ukrainian educational spaces in the capital of California. It is thanks to you that Ukrainian children, even far from home, have the opportunity to grow in the warmth of their native culture, hear the Ukrainian language, song, and from childhood not lose connection with their roots. Because Ukraine begins with such little hearts.
