On this day, art became not only a source of aesthetic pleasure but also an expression of humanity, compassion, and concern for the fate of those who need our help the most. - [Petrykivka Painting in Chicago: Touch the Soul of Ukraine](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/19/petrykivka-painting-in-chicago-touch-the-soul-of-ukraine): Historical sources attest that individual items with Petrykivka painting patterns have survived since the 18th century. However, in its modern understanding, this art form emerged at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It all began with people's desire to cover the walls (both interior and exterior) of their modest homes with bright patterns and marvelous scenes that demonstrated the unity of humans with nature. From there, we see whimsical plants, original flowers, and fantastic birds—even the mythical firebird—that delight the eye with colors, line curves, and incredibly beautiful ornaments. In a short time, these decorations "moved" from the walls to stoves, furniture, chests, dishes, and other household items, and simply onto paper, transforming into wonderful paintings. The primary colors used—red, yellow, green, and blue—symbolized the strength of life, the beauty of life, love, the life-giving energy of the sun, the joy of a bountiful harvest, and the peace and beauty bestowed upon humans by nature. - [Another Donald Trump](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/19/another-donald-trump): During his first tenure in the Oval Office, Donald Trump criticized Europe for purchasing Russian gas and emphasized that this would create a dangerous dependency on the Kremlin. There are well-known clips showing German ministers laughing at these words of the American president. Now, this laughter appears to be a perfect example of shortsightedness and a lack of strategic thinking. Berlin was warned that the completion of the "Nord Streams" might not lead to Putin's involvement in big business with Europe, but rather to a major war in Europe. - [35 Years on the World Map: The Annexation of Crimea — The Beginning of Russia's War Against Ukraine](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/19/35-years-on-the-world-map-the-annexation-of-crimea-the-beginning-of-russias-war-against-ukraine): The shooting at Maidan and the escape of President Yanukovych divided Ukraine's fate into "before" and "after." Depicting the victory of the Revolution of Dignity as a "coup d'état" and the "rise to power of the Bandera junta," since February 2014, Russia began its aggression against Ukraine: initially covertly, using "hybrid" methods, it occupied Crimea, as well as the Donetsk and Luhansk regions; and on February 24, 2022, it launched full-scale, open military actions aimed at the complete destruction of the Ukrainian state. - ["Babyn Yar. Voices": San Francisco Stage Production Brings Marianna Kiyanovska's Poetry to Life](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/12/babyn-yar-voices-san-francisco-stage-production-brings-marianna-kiyanovskas-poetry-to-life): Hromada's Wandering Stars theater moved audiences at Ukrainian Hall San Francisco with "Babyn Yar. Voices," a poetic performance based on Marianna Kiyanovska's verse, giving voice to the roughly 100,000 people murdered at Babyn Yar. The evening raised $4,153.24 for Hromada's humanitarian projects. The next performance is October 18, and tickets are available on Sharvarok. - [Looking for a job, a place to live, or a local pro in the U.S.? During the Holy Liturgy, sincere prayers were offered, which, along with the parishioners, were lifted to the heavens by the esteemed and always welcome guests of the church — priests from other parishes. - [The Song that Unites Across the Ocean: Ruslana Lotsman — The Ukrainian Soul in California](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/08/the-song-that-unites-across-the-ocean-ruslana-lotsman-the-ukrainian-soul-in-california): The Honored Artist of Ukraine performed charity concerts in San Francisco and Sacramento, met with the Ukrainian community, and explained why song, language, and culture help maintain a connection with the Homeland. - [What Putin Counting On?](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/05/what-putin-counting-on): To the question of what exactly Putin hopes for after four and a half years of the Russian-Ukrainian war, in a situation where his troops, which were supposed to capture at least the entire Donetsk region in the first months after the attack (and in fact, according to Putin's plan, they should have captured it back in 2014), against the backdrop of continued sanctions and the beginning of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, there is a clear and understandable answer. - [Order of Saint Panteleimon Honors Medical and Humanitarian Leaders at 2026 Award Ceremony in Chicago](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/05/order-of-saint-panteleimon-honors-medical-and-humanitarian-leaders-at-2026-award-ceremony-in-chicago): The Overseas Council of the USA brought together representatives from the fields of healthcare, humanitarian activities, diplomacy, clergy, the public sector, and the Ukrainian community to celebrate exceptional service to Ukraine. - [Smart Minds: 5 years with children and for children](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/04/smart-minds-5-years-with-children-and-for-children): On September 20, 2026, the Smart Minds Child and Youth Development Center in Chicago celebrated its first anniversary — five years of learning, creativity, children's smiles, hard work, and love for Ukrainian roots. - [Borshch Festival: Sincere, Delicious, and Patriotic](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/04/borshch-festival-sincere-delicious-and-patriotic): Where there is borscht, there is a sense of family. There is a sense of Ukraine. A sense of the Cossack spirit. Therefore, if we manage to make this festival in Chicago a tradition, I see numerous locations here in the future for family and communal recreation. - [The Vyshyvanka That United America](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/10/02/the-vyshyvanka-that-united-america): Hromada’s nationwide flash mob celebrating the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day came to a close with giveaway winner Serhii Topchii receiving a special vyshyvanka donated by Roksolana Bogutska. The initiative brought Ukrainians across the United States together to celebrate Ukrainian culture, tradition, and a shared sense of community. - ["We Want to Change the Rhetoric About Ukrainian Warriors": Mykhailo Ukhman on the Film "Omega"](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/28/we-want-to-change-the-rhetoric-about-ukrainian-warriors-mykhailo-ukhman-on-the-film-omega): Ukrainian cinema about war is often associated with pain, losses, and heavy stories. But is it possible to talk about war differently — through the strength, character, and daily work of Ukrainian soldiers? This is precisely the shift in rhetoric that film producer and co-writer Mykhailo Uhman seeks to propose. - [Recipe for Memories](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/28/recipe-for-memories): Summer is coming to an end, children are returning to school, the last cucumbers are being harvested from the garden, and memories of the SUM summer camp still surround us. The sleeping bag hasn't yet found its way back to the closet. A photograph of your group is already proudly displayed on the bedroom shelf. Registration for another year of weekly meetings is now open. Around the family dinner table, stories of funny incidents from camp come to life again, and conversations have already started: "When will we go to camp next summer..." - [Putin's Logic of Endurance](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/24/putins-logic-of-endurance): Volodymyr Zelensky met with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York. Currently, this meeting does not appear to lead to any concrete results in the process of finding opportunities to end the war. However, the fact of the meeting itself is important because it demonstrates that the President of the United States cannot simply ignore this war and that the search for ways to end it and cooperation with Ukraine remains an important part of the American political agenda ‒ at least until the midterm elections, which are significant for Donald Trump. - [Children of Ukrainian Heroes under the Peaceful Sky of California](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/21/children-of-ukrainian-heroes-under-the-peaceful-sky-of-california): Almost a month without air raid alerts, explosions, and the constant anticipation of danger. A month during which one could see the ocean, visit Disneyland, sit by the campfire, make new friends, and once again allow oneself to dream. In the summer of 2026, California welcomed 21 children from Poltava region who directly experienced the consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Among the participants of the trip were 18 children of fallen Ukrainian Heroes, two children whose parents are considered missing, and one child whose father is in Russian captivity. - [Day of the Ukrainian Sunflower. Why not?](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/21/day-of-the-ukrainian-sunflower-why-not): On September 5, social media was filled with images of the brightest Ukrainian flower — the sunflower. On this day, the organization "Orange Wave" held the first online flash mob "Ukrainian Sunflower Day." Agreeably, turned towards the sun, golden-orange, it seems to radiate an undying hope for light. In general, it's hard to imagine a Ukrainian summer without sunflowers. For Ukrainians scattered around the world, this flower has become a poignant reminder of their native land, the vibrant beauty of its warm days. - [In the warm embrace of the "Rodyna" festival](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/14/in-the-warm-embrace-of-the-rodyna-festival): For the "Rodyna Fest" festival, due to the absence of church grounds, a portion of Rice Street is traditionally set up. And although many guests attend the festival, it never feels crowded. The fact that the festival lasts only one day encourages everyone to arrive early and stay until the very end, so as not to miss or lose something particularly important. To have time to be inspired by the communal prayer and the feeling of home. This is exactly what the festival's advertisement promised. - [Ukrainians in Alaska: A Diaspora Without Unity, or A Step Towards Unity of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Alaska. It is considered one of the most beautiful and coldest states, where many Americans live, including Ukrainians. Speaking of the total number of Ukrainians, there are not many, and they are scattered across different cities. However, the majority of Ukrainians do not live in the state capital, Juneau, but in Anchorage. - [Honoring Those Who Stand with Ukrainian Healthcare: Order of Saint Panteleimon Awards Gala to Be Held in Chicago](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/07/honoring-those-who-stand-with-ukrainian-healthcare-order-of-saint-panteleimon-awards-gala-to-be-held-in-chicago): September 26 event will recognize extraordinary medical and humanitarian service to Ukraine and feature John Hewko as keynote speaker. - ["Vira & Volya Fest" — a celebration with Ukraine in the heart](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/07/vira-volya-fest-a-celebration-with-ukraine-in-the-heart): On a sunny Sunday, the town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a moment became a little Ukraine. Ukrainian songs were heard, familiar words were spoken, friends and families met, and there was a special light in people's eyes that appears when a short word with great unifying and inspiring power is present — together! - [Why Putin Needs Witkoff and Kushner](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/09/07/why-putin-needs-witkoff-and-kushner): A few months ago, the very possibility of resuming negotiations between Russia and Ukraine with the participation of American intermediaries seemed more like political fiction, although both in Moscow and Kyiv, new visits by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were not ruled out. - [35 years on the world map. The beginning of national-democratic transformations in Ukraine and the gas wars](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/31/35-years-on-the-world-map-the-beginning-of-national-democratic-transformations-in-ukraine-and-the-gas-wars): Viktor Yushchenko, for the first time since the declaration of independence, undertook the implementation of a national-patriotic program and aimed to infuse statehood with national identity. Specifically, during his presidency, a gradual rehabilitation of the history of the national liberation movement of the Ukrainian people took place in Ukrainian society: the first monuments to Stepan Bandera were erected, the first streets were renamed in honor of heroes of the struggle against Russian oppression, and so on; the Holodomor was recognized as genocide. - ["Unity March" in Chicago: Here Hearts Beat in Unison with Ukraine](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/30/unity-march-in-chicago-here-hearts-beat-in-unison-with-ukraine): Despite the fact that this year my Ukraine celebrates only 35 years of its Independence, my love for it is older — exactly as many years as I have lived in this world, which is already a bit more than 35. - [Ukrainian Voice at the Capitol: How Ukraine's Independence Day Was Celebrated in California's Capital](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/27/ukrainian-voice-at-the-capitol-how-ukraines-independence-day-was-celebrated-in-californias-capital): Thousands of kilometers away from Ukraine, the community gathered not just to celebrate Independence Day — they came to remind the world about a country that still has to fight for its right to exist. On one of the posters was a number that required no further explanation: 1643 days. - [Happy Independence Day, Ukraine! 💙💛](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/24/happy-independence-day-ukraine): The Hromada team in California joins Ukrainians around the world in celebrating the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence. Volodymyr and Olha, can undoubtedly be called special. Primarily because, since the early days of our independence, festival events have taken place right here in this neighborhood, and only later did they begin to be organized in other parish communities of the many Ukrainian churches in Chicago and the surrounding towns. Therefore, coming here feels like returning to the roots. - [35 Years on the World Map (Part I)](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/24/35-years-on-the-world-map-part-i): Ukraine celebrates the 35th anniversary of the declaration of independence on August 24. The path from a Soviet republic to an independent state is a steep, winding road over a precipice. - [Older than Trump](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/24/older-than-trump): On the eve of the thirty-fifth anniversary of Ukrainian independence, a whole group of leading American politicians visited Kyiv. Among them were former U.S. presidential representative on Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, Senators James Lankford and Richard Blumenthal, former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, former congressmen, and spiritual leaders. An expert on current American politics might say that primarily ceremonial figures gathered in the Ukrainian capital. - [Enrollment is open for the new bachelor's program in Physical Therapy at UCU](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/17/enrollment-is-open-for-the-new-bachelors-program-in-physical-therapy-at-ucu): The Ukrainian Catholic University is launching a new bachelor's degree program in "Physical Therapy." Therefore, the festival celebration was centered around this beautiful jubilee date. The festival itself has also reached an interesting milestone: by Ukrainian standards, it has come of age, as it is being held for the 18th time. And not once has it betrayed its main idea: to nourish and fill its guests with prayer, faith, hope, love, and Ukraine. - [Ukrainian Veterans tour US universities. The tour was executed in coordination with the Ukrainian Charitable Platform and the Ukrainian Catholic University Foundation (UCUF). - [War of Cities](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/10/war-of-cities): When the front line freezes and doesn't move even a kilometer for weeks, armies sooner or later turn to another target — not the enemy's trenches, but their cities. This is not a new ingenuity from the Kremlin. The world has already seen this logic during the Iran-Iraq war, which contemporaries aptly named: the war of the cities. - ["With Ukraine in the Heart"](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/08/10/with-ukraine-in-the-heart): Two days of unity, culture, music, and the indomitable Ukrainian spirit—this is how the festival held in picturesque Richmond will be remembered. However, no other season compares to summer, as summer in Chicago is the time for Ukrainian festivals, which take place in almost all church parishes. These incredible festive events traditionally resemble a beautiful lacework, interwoven with our spirituality, culture, national identity, customs and traditions, and our talismans. - [The Mission of Laura Loomer](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/07/27/the-mission-of-laura-loomer): The visit of the well-known American right-wing conservative blogger Laura Loomer to the Ukrainian capital was perceived by the Ukrainian authorities and covered by our media as if it were the visit of an official whose decisions affect the relations between Ukraine and the United States. Against the backdrop of Russian ballistic attacks, Volodymyr Zelensky gave an interview to Laura Loomer, and my colleague Marichka Padalka emotionally told the MAGA activist about the Ukrainian roots of her Jewish grandfather. - [Cash in Your Closet](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/07/21/cash-in-your-closet): Turn unused items into extra cash with Sharvarok—the first Ukrainian marketplace in the U.S. Sell electronics, furniture, cars, and kids' items in minutes using AI-powered listing creation. It will appear as the political testament of one of the most extraordinary American politicians of recent decades. - ["Independent Ukraine: From Idea to Action". Initially, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that no real agreements were reached in Anchorage — only proposals were discussed. Subsequently, American media reported that during the Group of Seven summit in Evian, U.S. President Donald Trump made it clear that he no longer wished to return to the understanding reached in Anchorage and sharply criticized his Russian counterpart. - [Global Leadership of Ukrainians: How the Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation of America Shapes Education, Partnerships, and International Support for Ukraine](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/06/29/global-leadership-of-ukrainians-how-the-kyiv-mohyla-foundation-of-america-shapes-education-partnerships-and-international-support-for-ukraine): The war has changed Ukraine and Ukrainian communities around the world. Millions of descendants from previous waves of emigration have been joined by millions of new Ukrainians. I was struck by how much younger the global Ukrainian community has become. On stage, in the corridors, during discussions, over coffee—everywhere, there were many young people who are not waiting for someone else to change the world for them. - [The Story That Started with $359: Selfreliance Federal Credit Union Celebrates 75 Years of Success](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/06/28/the-story-that-started-with-359-selfreliance-federal-credit-union-celebrates-75-years-of-success): Imagine a financial institution that, at the beginning of its operations, did not have computers, its own office, or even a simple iron safe. The treasurer literally carried the first savings of the depositors in his own pocket when returning home in the evening. It sounds like the beginning of an adventure novel, but this is the real story of how, in 1951, one of the most successful financial projects of the Ukrainian diaspora began – the Selfreliance Federal Credit Union. - [Living Despite Everything](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/06/22/living-despite-everything): The first Ukrainian amateur theater in San Francisco, "Wandering Stars," intrigued me long before the premiere with their announcement: "One Must Live!" — a theatrical revue based on the National Unity Radio Dictation. A dictation, mostly a dry text without any dramatic plot — not only to bring it to the stage but also in the revue genre, that is, a musical? - [Join the California Battalion: “Cuba & Alaska” Screening to Support Ukraine’s Frontline Defenders](https://hromada.us/en/articles/2026/06/20/join-the-california-battalion-cuba-alaska-screening-to-support-ukraines-frontline-defenders): Join the California Battalion of the 50 States For Ukraine initiative on July 7 at San Francisco’s Roxie Theatre for a special screening of Cuba & Alaska — a powerful documentary following two Ukrainian frontline medics as they navigate the realities of war, resilience, loss, and hope.
